5God’ November
Vampire at Night by Rhiannon Frater is the first in a collection of three novels. I host the reading of Fraterfest every year and try to read at least one of the works of this author. It was completely addictive and left me wanting more.

There’s a vampire at night …
… waiting to fulfill an ancient prophecy and conquer the world. But first, he must wait for the right moment to finally expose himself to the young woman he thinks is his right to sue: and was shot. There’s a vampire at night …
… who captures Vena’s eye and heart. Still, can she trust him? For her enemy had enveloped her in a web of deception, and cast doubt on all that she believed to be true.
The original book was released as an episodic series, this book contains episodes 1-5 of the first season. In Darkness We Must Abide is a three-book series. It is not read as a series (the whole infinite summary is absent), instead the story is fast and addictive. The first book ends with enough hook to make me pick up the next book.
The story begins in the present before returning us to events that took place ten years ago in Houston, Texas, where the 32-year-old Sokoli affair with his sisters lives. His half-sister Elisha is twenty-two years old, and together they raise their half-orphaned brother and Nora, a husband of albinos. Roman inadvertently opens the door to evil when he buries his Romanian ancestors on their property.
I enjoyed the pace of the book and was quickly drawn from the suspenseful horror to how they coped with the fallout. Prater knows how to connect with her readers and I imagine that the wait between episodes when she was serially released was disturbing.
I loved the characters. Roman, the head of the family, tries to protect everyone and does so. His doctrine quickly affects others. Elisha and Lonora have the Celtic gift of their mother. That of Elisha appears in her paintings and Vanora in her dreams. Armando is the mysterious stranger who befriends them, but brings with him danger.
The thread of the series is addictive from the secrets to dreams. This first collection shares the past and takes us to the present. The structure was fantastic and the ending will make you download the second collection of answers.
Fans of horror stories, dark, gloomy and addictive vampires will want to start these if they have not yet devoured them. Have you read them?
