title: The dragon bird in the fern

The dragon bird in the fern is a story about a girl who is pushed into a world she does not understand. Foreign language, foreign owner, foreign customs. Not to mention, every time she tried to read words on a page, they jumped and danced around.
Giara is trying. In Afrikaans I would call her “Cani-David”. Although she has failed several times in several things, she keeps trying. She keeps trying to learn a hard language, she keeps trying to understand a new country and its people, she keeps trying to find her sister’s killer.
Jiara and her husband do not even speak the same language, but they manage to communicate.
I have to admit that the concept of “walkers,” one of the antagonists in the book, is pretty scary. The idea that ghosts go so crazy for revenge that they kill their families with violent rage was intriguing, especially when the Earth promenade follows Jiara wherever she goes.
I definitely felt there was some chemistry between Jiara and Rappar, but it still felt somehow like love insta. The side characters do not feel particularly developed and although the villain’s character did not read consistently, he turned out to be a vicious antagonist.
Definitely a fun, fast-paced, bite-sized fantasy for anyone who wants to get out of a reading slump.
