How Much Time Should I Spend on Reading?

Reading is one of the best activities that can help you with your personal growth. The reason is not just the vast knowledge and information that reading offers, but also the exposure to multiple points of view. This makes reading a major key to success.

The world’s richest and most successful people, such as Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Jack Ma, devote a lot of their time to reading every day.

As per the BLS American Time Use Survey, the individuals aged between 15-44 years read for an average of 10 minutes or less per day. But with age, the time people spend reading increases. The survey also found that individuals aged 75 years and over, read for almost 51 minutes on average.

Based on the survey, the average time people spend reading per day is about 16 minutes only.

There are a lot of benefits of reading, but it’s a time-consuming activity. It’s almost seems impossible for most individuals to stay focused enough on their career and find the time to read.

Time People SHOULD Spend Reading

In a study conducted by the University of Michigan, subjects were asked how many hours they spend reading each week. After collecting the data, it was found that people who spend about 30 minutes reading every day lived two years longer on average than those who did not read.

This study was conducted over a period of 24 years, so you can not expect you’ll reap the benefits of reading if you do not read regularly. You have to dedicate 30 minutes to reading each and every day.

There are many benefits of reading, such as it reduces stress, improves your emotional IQ, and increases your knowledge. Another main benefit of reading is that it improves your intelligence. By reading every day, you will live longer than the non-readers and the people who do not read regularly.

A Tip from Avid Readers

As per the result of a survey done in 2017, British adults, on average, spend almost 2 hours and 49 minutes using their smartphones. So, if you want to cultivate a good reading habit, you simply have to reduce your screen time.

This is a very helpful tip if you want to dedicate more time to reading each day.

What’s the Best Time to Read?

You can read whenever you want. There is no specific time for reading, but experts say morning is the best time to read. You can also read at night if you’re having trouble falling asleep. Read for at least 30 minutes every day. It will expand your mind and also reduce stress by up to 68%.

Another great advantage of reading is that it improves cognitive function, memory and increases empathy. Moreover, reading improves learning capacity as well as social skills.

Considering all these benefits, it is clear that you need to teach children to read from an early age. Reading increases your knowledge and prepares you for this world. So, next time you’re scrolling your Insta feed or Twitter, put your phone down and start reading a good book.
