Interview with Jefferson Nunn, Author of Burning Mold

-

What is the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Burning mold?

For two years I was exposed to mold. I had no idea what it was like at that time. Every new day during that time, I had more pain and more problems. I went to the emergency room 11 times. I went to 37 different doctors. It was only at the end of this two-year period that I discovered that I had mold in my blood and body. It was a shocking discovery and I am still recovering from this exposure. From here, I had the start of an idea for this story.

If you had to choose theme songs for the main characters of Burning moldWhat will they be?

For Aries, I would choose “When Johnny Comes to Walk Home” (Die Hard)

For Jean, I would choose “Rachel’s Song” (Blade Runner)

For Chad, I would choose “Halycon On and On” (hackers)

For Cheryl, I would choose “Back to Sender” (Elvis)

If you had to write an advertisement for the last book you read, what would it say?

An armed and armored whale-level battleship wakes up from its coma and finds the perfect entity to lead the ship. Can this creature and its square crew prevent a galactic war using this non-violent ship to demand peace? Lexx and Eve Online fans will enjoy the Battleship Leviathan series.

What is your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read and write only science fiction.

Do you have any weird writing habits? Where did you write Burning mold?

Every Sunday afternoon is my quiet / writing time. I spend an average of six hours just connecting the world and the characters and then writing the story. Every person has a “catch” that opens their writing gates. For me it was the book series “Save the Cat”. This one book made everything click for me. I was able to organize the characters and then write all 3 book series over about two years, six hours a week. This is how this story was created.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

There is only one thing to always remember – listen.
