Torn pages

Published: April 7, 2019

Regarding the book:

Ever escaped into a book?

Dave and his friends run away for a few.

It has been months since Alice Collins left town in a very verbal “odyssey.” When she returns, it’s a hail of fire and death. Dave, his friends and teachers have always existed in their sleepy town of Melville, now they are waking up rudely. An army of stormy monsters in the forest. The old trees grow hands and feet and develop a taste for people. It’s good that Alice’s mysterious mother, Molly, has a strange house with a dark and seemingly bottomless basement that may, just maybe, lead to other worlds.

The Collins family is always gone. good party. They have a secret that few know: they can set fire to blue fire with bare hands …

Dave soon passes through an epic fantasy kingdom, a murderous country estate, and is forced to mediate between a tortured creator and his work. All the while, enemies are sizzling. Alice must use her special gift to fight murderous crows, cyclops, hydrangeas and thousands of man-eating trees. Their journey leads them all the way to a kingdom ruled by an evil family with pumpkins to their faces, where the ultimate royal battle begins …

Cat Review:

Torn Pages was such a fun and compelling read! It felt like I was jumping into a whole new fantasy world – one that would excite and scare any reader out there! Ralph Burton’s writing style made it easy to be invested in the story – and in the characters. Immediately there was a sense of something else happening, even when the world seemed exactly what one might expect. Right up until suddenly everything turned upside down, of course.

Personally, I loved how torn pages read different from many other books I had read, even from those from a similar genre. It’s always refreshing to have something else, it feels like breathing fresh air, you know? Part of me is actually a little sad that this is an independent novel!

The Pixies

Published: July 16, 2021

Regarding the book:

Lily last saw the dreaded pixies as they killed her father and confined her to this orphanage, a castle buried in the middle of the forest. Now, nine years later, when a battalion of soldiers arrives with black boxes carrying ancient Egyptian monsters, Lily is about to hold a reunion. Only she knows that pixies can reveal to their victims the biggest dreams and the worst nightmares …

Cat Review:

While the Pixies is a much shorter read than torn pages, I found it no less captivating. True, any book that includes monsters is guaranteed to attract (and hold) my attention! The Pixies blend in a bit here – it’s both a traditional and a completely new concept of Pixies, and I personally absolutely admired it. While there were many elements that felt familiar, Ralph Burton successfully turned it into a story that made itself. It will become a fantastic read for fantasy lovers … especially those who want to try and get out of puzzles, or experience another fantasy adventure.

Having read two of Ralph Burton’s books now, I feel safe to say that his writing style is unique, and I mean it well! The way he looks at the world is different, and so is the way he presents his characters. It makes for a fun read, one with a lot of little surprises. This, combined with interesting worlds and characters, should be more than enough to keep most readers invested.
