This Rigor of Duration

This Rigor of Duration by David Colin is a fictional novella that highlights the oppression faced by the minorities due to their color and gender. The novella presents a heart-wrenching story of an unnamed narrator who’s a humanitarian that has been wronged by the system. This thought-provoking book takes readers on a profound journey delivered through the narrator’s point-of-view where we are given explicit accounts of the torture faced by him through the media and legal system.

This deeply thoughtful novel gets to the point from the very first page. From the beginning readers will know they are in for a quick yet intense ride that will make them reflect on their own privilege while engulfing them with the unfair reality of the world.

The story flows well, with uncomplicated diction that lulls you into thinking this will be a light read. This is an intellectually invigorating novel, observant and contemplative and gives readers plenty to think about. There is no fixed setting because the novella presents an account of what is happening in the outside world along with the inside of the narrator’s mind, which I thought was a bit hard to follow at times.

The language is interesting with heavy use of camel cases in between sentences to highlight certain words. Collin has also used gender neutral words for the most part to create a sense of collective suffering of the marginalized along with the collective oppression by “Them”. Italics and capital letter words are also used throughout to bring your attention to the necessary details highlighting the exploitation.

The chapters are concise, which ensures readers are moving along nicely, even though the subject matter is heavy. This is a book that will demand your attention because it has a lot to offer in so few pages. This Rigor of Duration will enlighten readers about injustices while also keeping readers hooked with interesting storytelling.
